What I do

I am an economist, motivational speaker and advocate for environmentally sustainable social and economic development as the means to end global poverty. My personal mission is to strive everyday and in every way possible to promote, support, facilitate and undertake efforts—large and small—to eradicate poverty and hunger everywhere, and to promote and defend human rights and dignity.

At the same, I am troubled by the speed and extent of global warming, climate change and environmental degradation. Wanton exploitation of natural resources, coupled with unsustainable consumption and production patterns, in particular, threaten the integrity of the biosphere and the survival of plant and animal species around the world. Therefore, I am also a committed environmentalist and advocate for animal rights.

I am currently President of the International Committee for October 17. The date in the name of this independent and internationally diverse Committee has special significance because it is the day when the United Nations celebrates its International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. This annual observance honouring the dignity and daily struggles of people living in poverty has its origins in the popular people’s movement which began observing the 17th of October as the World Day for Overcoming Poverty in 1987. On that occasion, over a hundred thousand people from all walks of life gathered at the Trocadéro Plaza in Paris, where the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was signed in 1948, to honour the victims of extreme poverty, violence and hunger. I am proud to be a Friend and Ally of the International Movement ATD Fourth World.

In recent years, I have developed special expertise in the area of education diplomacy. Education Diplomacy uses the skills of diplomacy grounded in human rights principles to advance education as a driver for human development. I am currently a member of the Association for Childhood Education International (ACEI) Advisory Group on Education Diplomacy.

I am a member of the United Nations’ Bureau of Speakers and undertake pro bono ad hoc speaking engagements on a range of topics with a special focus on poverty, human rights and sustainable development.

Please check my availability for speaking engagements using the contact form below. (See: list of speaking engagements)
